I'm a fan of Futurama and I want to ask a question. When will the new Simpsons season start?  Albert, you of all people should know that that question belongs in the Simpsons catagory. However, it is a good question and we'll answer it here anyway. As we all know, the new season of the Simpsons is at a standstill due to prolonged negotiations between the actors and Fox. Meanwhile, the animation staff waits patiently to return to work. After speaking to sources at Film Roman and Gracie Films, I received the same response: "You don't work on the show anymore. What do you care?" There you have it. Our thoughts and best wishes are with the talented Simpsons artists, and as for the untalented ones, well, maybe you should use this time to take some classes. |

How come the animators could never animate water the same way twice? Welcome to the RDS Mesage Board, MooseOnMars. Your question about water is a good one. You see, there are so many different types of water, (traditionally animated water, cgi water, water that's just drawn on the background and doesn't move, etc,) and the director will choose the style of water he/she thinks will play best in a scene depending on the mood or feeling he/she wants to put across. These guys make lots of creative choices each day, and, awww christ, this is just a lot of bull $**t. Listen, making that show was back breaking labor--it was like Vietnam on a daily basis. We worked so hard trying to make a good sci fi/comedy show, and well, sorry if the damn WATER was not to your liking! I don't know--ultimately I blame the "supervising" director. Hope that answers your question, Moose. ;D |

I get the distinct feeling that you think I don't like Sarge for some reason.
• If so, this couldn't be farther from the truth. You're right, Sarge is cool. We're old friends from college and when you've known someone that long, there's a certain amount of teasing that goes on. And let's face it, the guy smokes like a fiend.
• If not, please disregard all that nice stuff I said up there about that bum Sarge"Wa-Wa" Morton.
Anyway about your question. I asked the Director of Computer Graphics, Scott Vanzo, to help me answer this, but after ten minutes of him explaining it to me, I realized I didn't know what the hell he was talking about. So I decided to try and answer it myself. Here goes.
In a scene like the one with the PE Ship landing and all the vines grabbing it (from that episode where Kiff get's pregnant for some reason.. Leela touched him, and, well I don't why it happened, but you know what I'm talking about), the 3D is done first. That computer animation is then printed onto animation paper so now a traditional 2D artist can animate the vines and register them perfectly to the ship. Then the whole mess is digitized and composited in a digital camera station. What is created (hopefully) is a perfectly blended scene of CG and traditional animation.
I hope that answers your question, but next time, make it a little easier, you know, like, "Is that really Nibbler's shadow under the desk in the cryogenics lab?"

I do actually have a real question: how do the animators decide which parts are to be hand animated and which are to be done by computer? For example, in The Honking, Bender as a were-car continuously alternates between 2D and 3D, and I was wondering if there was a specific reason why he's 2D in some shots and 3D in others. But if you don't like that one, I have a better question: is that really Leela's parents in the background of I Second That Emotion? |

Even though I didn't work in the 3D department, I would say that 3D characters were generally done when it was deemed that the 3D guys had nothing else to do. Why wasn't the entire show done in 3D? |

Thanks to our sharp eyed friends at PEEL for bringing this to our attention.
I'm not quite sure how to even begin to explain how something like this happens. Nor will I try to justify it.
All I can do is agree that this is obviously one of the lousiest drawings of Leela I have ever seen during my four seasons of production on Futurama. The pose is clunky, the silhouette is even clunkier, and the face...don't get me started. This is what we call here in the Glendale hood, "whack".
In our defense, mArc, let me at least say this -- when we have upwards of eight episodes in various stages of production at one time, things are going to slip through the cracks now and then. I apologize to anyone whose entertainment value was short-changed due to this "Leela Abomination". It won't happen again.
Fry, however looks pretty cool. That's some funny s**t!

A rumour as filtered down to peelified.com (believed to have originated at The Leela Zone website) that David X Cohen is phoning the cast about doing some new episodes of Futurama, and since this message board is the only conduit to the powers that create the show, I'm wondering if there's any validity to this rumour?

Moose, last time I spoke to him, that's exactly what David was doing. I'll bet ya some eager, hopeful fan (bless his/her heart) probably heard that David was working on an animated project and jumped to the conclusion that it was Futurama related.
Or, on the other hand, maybe I just haven't received MY phone call yet -- no surprise there, huh Cohen?!
